After winning the second stage, Kashima qualified for the finals where they faced Jubilo Iwata. After trailing for almost the entire match, Kashima grabbed two late goals, one from Hirase, to tie the first leg. The title was to be retained thanks to a golden goal from Mitsuo Ogasawara
