Richard Hill came in to replace Fairclough, with solid foundations to build on the side expected a promotion push. However results declined and Boro ended up finishing 6th, despite Carl Alford's best efforts, scoring 33 times in 49 appearances for the side. 1999-00 saw the side standing still once again, with a new chairman at the helm in Phil Wallace. Boro started brightly, winning six from six before hitting a poor run of form cost manager Richard Hill his job, to be replaced by the experienced Steve Wignall. Wignall lasted just 8 games at Broadhall Way before departing for Doncaster leaving the club in the mire and eventually leading to a 10th place finish
